Summer is slowly coming to a close. In other words, many of us are starting to trade in our protective styles and curly crowns for sleek blowouts and fluffy silk presses, just in time for the fall season. Lucky for us all, here to help us make that transition is our hair fairy god mother, Tracee Ellis Ross.
PATTERN Beauty’s latest launches—the Detox Shampoo, Blow Out Primer, and the Vibrating Flat Iron—have your desired look in mind—while also preserving the quality and health of your hair, so that versatility remains easily at your fingertips; literally. “So we are expanding into heat and listening to the request of our consumer. I feel like the curling irons really kind of set something off. From there, we began to hear, ‘what about a flat iron?’ a lot,” Ross shares with ESSENCE exclusively via Zoom, fresh off of her brilliant Broadway run. She’s clad in a sunshine yellow blouse and the sleekest of sleek high ponytails that she can’t stop touching due to its softness, which can likely be attested to the new products.

At the end of the day, Ross reminds us that, “Heat is heat. It is what it is,” she says. “So, if you’re going to do that, it’s all about understanding how you make sure that you are set up for success?” Her innovative flat iron, of course, answers this question. “Thanks to the ceramic plates and vibrating plates, you have even heat distribution,” she says of the plates that include one that moves and one that doesn’t. “It allows you to get that smooth, even pull through. And the vibration is ensuring you have to do less passes so you don’t have to keep tugging on your hair,” she adds.
Meanwhile, the Detox Shampoo “strips the buildup that can start making you want to do more passes and put more heat on the hair,” she says. “This is what can start creating that smoke, which then can damage your cuticle.”
Lastly, the Blowout Primer is a great addition to your blowout routine, thanks to its lightweight nature and heat protective technology. Afterwards, you go in for a few passes with your flat iron. “And then when you’re ready to jump back into your texture. You can bounce back with our pre-poo, get that breakage barrier mask or treatment mask, get yourself conditioned, and then you can go right back into your curls,” she shares.
And an iconic launch wouldn’t be complete without an equally as iconic campaign surrounding it. Naturally, Ross tapped musical artist, and Silk Sonic’s finest, Anderson .Paak, who is known for rocking his silky bob when embracing his alter ego, DJ Pee .Wee. Additionally, singer Ryan Destiny rounds out the talent for this launch, also known for stunning and ultra sleek ‘dos. “We were really trying to think of who is known for their silky styles,” Ross shares. “And our dream came true. They literally were the two people that we wanted. It was just a great shoot with the three of us. It was so much fun,” she says of the campaign, which included a “bob-off” in the roll out.
As Ross reflects on yet another incredible launch, she gives her flowers to the incredible team bringing her visions to life. “It’s not just me and three other people who are just coming up with stuff and working with a chemist coming up with goop,” she shares with a laugh. “Now we have a PD department, a PD team, and this is their expertise,” she adds. “It’s been such a journey because, I think for me, innovation is really based on making things better,” Ross says. “It’s not just about ‘coolness.’ It’s truly about asking the question, ‘is this really going to answer a need and help do what it says it’s going to do and what it promises?’” And PATTERN continues to deliver, even at such an accessible price point.
Not only that, “we’re rooted in celebrating the joy and diversity of Black beauty and serving our community and all these different textures and the versatility and the possibility of what we can do with our hair,” she adds. “We have discovered a pattern that we are the authority on curl-conscious heat.”
The collection will be shoppable on PATTERNBeauty.com tomorrow, August 14, followed by Ulta Beauty online on August 16.
