President Donald Trump’s endorsement of a political candidate has proven to tip the scales in an election. But his latest endorsement in the Republican runoff for South Carolina governor is unlikely to sway the race any which way.
On Friday, Trump threw his support behind both candidates in the Tuesday runoff, telling voters in a social media post “you can’t go wrong” with either Lt. Gov. Pam Evette — whom he endorsed in the GOP primary in May — or state Attorney General Alan Wilson.
“Both have had amazing careers, and have been with me from the beginning. They are MAGA and America First all the way! These were the two that I was hoping would get into a Runoff, and they did,” Trump said. “I can’t hurt one of them by only Endorsing the other, so, therefore, I am going to Endorse, for Governor of South Carolina, both Pam Evette and Alan Wilson!”
Neither Evette nor Wilson had secured enough votes to win the GOP primary outright. Trump’s endorsement of Evette in the primary was also notable because of the snub against Rep. Nancy Mace, a onetime staunch supporter of the president whose push for the Justice Department’s release of the Epstein files enraged him.
The president made no mention of Mace in his latest post.
Trump has made a double-endorsement in a race before. In 2022, with former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens and then-state Attorney General Eric Schmitt running for the Republican Senate nomination, Trump declared that “ERIC has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Schmitt won the primary and was subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate.
