Donald Trump’s fixation on rebranding and renaming things — Cabinet agencies, military bases, ships, holidays, etc. — has become a staple of the president’s persona, but the Republican has shown a special interest in changing the names of bodies of water.

He invested an enormous amount of time and energy trying to rename the Gulf of Mexico, for example, which was soon followed by a fleeting effort to start referring to the Persian Gulf as “the Gulf of Arabia.” As recently as May, the president even went so far as to refer to the Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump.”

The list is still growing. On Tuesday morning, he published a new message to his social media platform that read, in its entirety:

The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

The missive came less than a day after Ontario Premier Doug Ford lashed out publicly at Trump over the White House’s new trade war against the United States’ neighbor and longtime ally. Indeed, Ford suggested that the province he leads could either raise the price or cut off entirely the electricity it exports to the U.S. “We power 1.5 million homes and businesses,” Ford said Monday. “Everything’s on the table. I’ll do whatever it takes.”

The premier also floated the possibility of cutting off the province’s critical minerals to the U.S.

Trump’s online statement also came just hours before Canadian officials scheduled an announcement on Ottawa’s “dollar for dollar” response to Trump’s new tariffs.

What the Republican hoped to achieve with his online statement is something of a mystery. For one thing, it’s silly to think anyone will stop referring to Lake Ontario as Lake Ontario at Trump’s insistence. For another, the idea that the United States won’t be “doing much business with Ontario” would likely come as a surprise to millions of Americans, especially those in the states spanning from Minnesota to New York, which border Canada’s most populous province.

Indeed, the fact that the president has resorted to such farcical taunts reinforces fears that he has no idea what he’s doing.
