Trump kicks off NATO summit with his favorite pro-Kremlin falsehood

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “doesn’t affect the United States,” President Donald Trump absurdly said during his kickoff news conference for the NATO summit being hosted in Turkey.

It was just the latest example of the president attempting to groom the public into accepting the obvious lie that Russia’s deathly imperial march to gobble up territory beyond its borders is of no consequence to Americans.

In reality, Russia’s invasion contributed significantly to an initial spike in oil prices and higher inflation pressures — issues that continue to affect global markets, U.S. Bank recently said. And that’s to say nothing of the geopolitical implications of Russia expanding its footprint and potentially threatening U.S. allies, which many of these allies fear.

Nonetheless, Trump made his comments Tuesday alongside Turkey’s authoritarian president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in a kickoff to the NATO summit in Ankara. As MS NOW reported, the summit comes as Trump has been ramping up his attacks on American allies and “increasingly isolating” the United States.

Trump has shown that he’s oddly desperate to promote this particular claim. In fact, his puerile Oval Office tantrum toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last year really kicked into full gear after Zelenskyy warned Trump — and by extension, Americans — of the reality that Russia’s invasion would affect the U.S., no matter the size of the Atlantic Ocean.

The claim that the military conflict “doesn’t affect” the U.S. is economically and geopolitically idiotic — and sounds like propaganda one might expect from the mouth of a KGB agent.

And that, unfortunately, leaves Americans with two equally disturbing potential takeaways: Trump is either too ignorant to know the truth, or he knows the truth and is serving Russia’s interests by lying.
