President Donald Trump will present the World Cup trophy at the final match on July 19 in New Jersey, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Monday.
“We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together,” Infantino said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”
“We are together all the time,” he said.
Trump, who is friends with Infantino, presented the FIFA Club World Cup to Chelsea last year after the club defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0. At the time, Trump broke with tradition by lingering around with the team on stage after awarding the trophy, despite Infantino’s apparent attempts to direct the president away so the players could celebrate.
The United States, Canada and Mexico are hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which began June 11. The FIFA president typically awards the trophy to the winning team with the host country’s head of state present. At the previous World Cup in Qatar in 2022, Infantino awarded the trophy to Argentina’s team captain, Lionel Messi, with the country’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, standing alongside him.
On rare occasions, heads of state have presented the trophy, including the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II to the English team in 1966 and Spain’s King Juan Carlos to the Italian team in 1982.
FIFA has not announced any plans for leaders from the other co-host countries, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, to join the ceremony.
