Trump’s White House openly says anti-immigrant ‘arcade’ games are meant to distract

The White House seems desperate for something — anything — to distract from President Donald Trump’s historic unpopularity and unhinged public meltdowns.

Trump’s remaining support appears confined to his most extreme loyalists. And with his domestic and foreign policy blunders hiking prices and getting Americans killed, the White House is apparently looking to distract with puerile games.

And I don’t say “games” metaphorically — I’m talking about actual arcade-style games, some of which are modeled after the president’s deadly and racist anti-immigrant crackdown.

The White House’s announcement of various games is best seen as an act of desperation from a regime in free fall. One of the games allows users to build a wall to “protect the border from the coming horde” and another allows users to chase and round up immigrants along the Rio Grande.

And the administration isn’t even hiding that this is meant to serve as a distraction, as evidenced by this post on Thursday:

I’ll note here that Trump’s anti-immigrant crusade is broadly unpopular, so here we have the White House effectively reminding Americans — in one of the most grotesque ways imaginable — of something they dislike about the president. I’ll also note that given the commentary about Trump’s mind being stuck in the 1980s, the idea of him releasing 8-bit knockoffs of early video games that reflect his perverse worldview is quite on-brand.

These games may be appealing to anyone still enamored with the White House’s efforts to troll its critics. But polling data has shown that a broad majority of Americans think Trump isn’t focused on the most important issues, and this bigoted stunt is unlikely to change their mind.

Nonetheless, the tactic of deploying bigoted propaganda to effectively distract from how this administration is wreaking havoc on Americans’ wallets is a topic I’ve highlighted since Trump’s return to office. I discussed it with MS NOW contributor Charles Coleman last year when he was guest-hosting for Ali Velshi.

As I explained it, Trump and his regime apparently think feeding Americans a steady diet of racism will suffice in lieu of policies that actually benefit the country — and these arcade games are just the latest example.
