Tuesday’s Campaign Round-Up, 4.14.26: Olivia Troye to run for Congress as a Democrat

Today’s installment of campaign-related news from across the country.

* In Donald Trump’s first term, Olivia Troye worked as a policy adviser to Vice President Mike Pence. Six years later, Troye is now a congressional candidate in Virginia, running as “a proud Democrat” and “MAGA’s top enemy.”

* With Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell resigning, there’s uncertainty surrounding when or whether there will be a special election in California to fill his vacancy. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said it’s reviewing the matter and will make an announcement once Swalwell’s seat is officially vacant.

* Speaking of Swalwell, in light of the scandal that ended his career, a dozen Democrats who received campaign contributions from the outgoing representative announced plans to donate the money to charity.

* While Georgia has generally been seen as a GOP stronghold in recent decades, Republican Gov. Brian Kemp conceded in his latest Politico interview, “This is going to be a tough cycle for us.”

* In Maryland, Democratic governor Wes Moore had held out hope for a redistricting effort that would have likely generated one more seat for his party. This week, as the clock ran out on the state legislative session, the governor’s plan came to an apparent end.

* In Louisiana, Calvin Duncan was imprisoned for almost three decades before being exonerated. He rebuilt his life and even ran a successful race to become the Orleans Parish clerk of criminal court. The Associated Press reported, however, that Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and the GOP-controlled Legislature are now “racing to eliminate his job before he can be sworn in.”

* And in case there was any doubt about Nikki Haley’s future ambitions after coming up short in the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, the former South Carolina governor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations told CNN this week that she “will not” be a candidate in 2028.
