Tuesday’s Mini-Report, 10.13.26

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* For Ukraine’s sake, I’m hoping these assertions are true: “President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States continues to ‌share intelligence with Ukraine and is working with both Kyiv and Moscow to bring an end to the war. ‘We are helping them, and we are sharing intel,’ Trump told reporters.”

* An interesting case heads to the high court: “The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to review the Trump administration’s latest plea for help against a watchdog group that has been fighting for information about the Elon Musk-backed Department of Government Efficiency.”

* Speaking of cases that have generated public interest: “U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes on Tuesday ordered a halt to tree-cutting at the East Potomac Golf Course until Oct. 26, putting a further pause on work at the historic D.C. course that has been part of President Donald Trump’s plans to remake the city. Reyes issued the order one day after a tense three-hour hearing in which she harshly criticized the government for having deceived her with its actions over the holiday weekend.”

* Moves like these will absolutely not make America healthy again: “Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s anti-vaccine views were a major factor in shelving an Agriculture Department avian flu response plan, according to five people with direct knowledge of the matter, a pause that’s alarming lawmakers as wild birds begin migrating for the winter.”

* The least surprising news of the day: “President Donald Trump was set to be deposed Friday in a defamation lawsuit he filed against the British Broadcasting Corporation, but his lawyers recently canceled the session and said he is unavailable through at least mid-December, according to a court filing.”

* The controversy around plans for a livestreamed execution is just getting started: “Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who oversees the Catholic Church’s pastoral services to Catholics in the U.S. military, is condemning the proposed livestream of the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan. Broglio, in a statement Monday, also stipulated that any Catholic soldier assigned to the U.S. Army firing squad should ask to be excused from that duty, which he described as contrary to the teachings of the church.”

* Speaking of the Catholic Church: “Pope Leo XIV underwent planned surgery Tuesday, during which doctors confirmed he has lung cancer, according to the Vatican. The operation was completed successfully without complications.”

See you tomorrow.
