Tuesday’s Mini-Report, 3.31.26

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* Another White House court defeat: “A federal judge on Tuesday ruled that President Donald Trump’s executive order ending federal funding for National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting Service is unconstitutional.”

* The administration was likely far happier with this 8-1 ruling: “The Supreme Court on Tuesday sided with a Christian counselor over Colorado in her challenge to the state’s ban on so-called conversion therapy for minors.”

* Ordinarily, I’d say it’s absurd to blame a president for higher gas prices, but there are exceptions: “U.S. gas prices jumped past an average of $4 a gallon for the first time since 2022 on Tuesday as the Iran war pushed fuel prices to soar worldwide. According to motor club AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is now $4.02 — over a dollar more than before the war began.”

* DHS warehouses: “The Department of Homeland Security is pausing plans to buy more warehouses to detain immigrants, according to two senior DHS officials who stressed the decision may only be temporary. The two officials said that while purchasing is on hold, plans are moving forward to develop facilities that have already been acquired for that purpose.”

* Worthwhile correspondence from Swalwell’s lawyers: “Lawyers for Representative Eric Swalwell sent a cease-and-desist letter to the F.B.I. on Monday seeking to block the release of files from a decade-old investigation into his ties to a suspected Chinese spy.”

* Military resources are not toys to be used for entertainment: “The Army has suspended the crews that piloted a pair of Apache helicopters close to the musician Kid Rock’s residence in Nashville over the weekend, Pentagon officials said on Tuesday. The crew members involved, who have not been identified, have been barred from flight duties, a spokesman said, a day after the Army began an inquiry into videos posted on social media of the flyover.”

* A plaque reading “A Throne Fit for a King” is included on the side of the display: “A golden toilet mocking President Trump was set up on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Monday. The toilet is spray-painted gold and set up on a fake marble pedestal—a jab at the president’s preferred design aesthetic—and directly references his renovation of the Lincoln Bathroom in the White House last year.”

See you tomorrow.
