Hunter Biden says his father’s prostate cancer has spread and that the former president’s condition is “very painful” and “very debilitating.”

In a wide-ranging interview with the BBC broadcast late on Friday, Biden became emotional as he described the ordeal for his father, former President Joe Biden, and their family.

“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further. It’s very painful, and it’s very debilitating in many respects. But he’s still out there,” Biden said.

The former president, 83, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office announced in May 2025. A few months later, he began radiation therapy and hormone treatment for his condition.

Biden said his father’s diagnosis has been “really sad to watch” for their family, which includes his stepmother, former first lady Jill Biden, who raised him and his late brother Beau Biden.

“My dad is, to this day, and remains the center of our family, not just because he — of who he is as a public person — but completely because of who he is to each one of us,” he added. “It’s really, really hard and it’s really sad to watch.”

A Biden spokesperson did not immediately respond to MS NOW’s request for comment.

The former president’s health and fitness for office was subject to fierce speculation during his time in the White House, and a major point of criticism from Republicans. He ultimately ended his 2024 reelection bid just months before the election under intense pressure from fellow Democrats after his disastrous showing at a presidential debate against then-GOP nominee Donald Trump.

Since leaving office, Biden has made a handful of public appearances, including at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago in June.
