August brings another round of films and TV shows to Netflix, with Black talent appearing throughout the month’s additions. Some familiar favorites are returning to the platform, while original releases offer new stories from recognizable names in entertainment and sports.

Comedy makes up a sizable portion of the lineup, particularly for anyone nostalgic for the early 2000s. Ice Cube leads Are We Done Yet?, Eddie Murphy returns with Daddy Day Care, and Martin Lawrence brings the laughs in National Security. On the dramatic side, Ava DuVernay’s Selma revisits the historic fight for voting rights, while Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black returns for its third season. Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube head into the Amazon in this 1997 thriller about a documentary crew whose expedition is overtaken by a hunter pursuing a massive anaconda. Jon Voight and Eric Stoltz also star in the Luis Llosa-directed film.

Are We Done Yet? (8/1)

Ice Cube and Nia Long return as Nick and Suzanne Persons, who leave city life behind after buying a home in the country. Their plans for a fresh start quickly unravel when renovations turn the property into a major headache.

After losing his job, Charlie Hinton turns childcare into his next business venture by opening a day care with his friend Phil. Eddie Murphy stars alongside Jeff Garlin, Steve Zahn and Anjelica Huston in the 2003 comedy.

National Security (8/1)

Martin Lawrence plays Earl Montgomery, a police academy reject who ends up working security alongside a former cop played by Steve Zahn. Their contentious partnership takes an unexpected turn when the pair uncover a smuggling operation.

Selma (8/1)

Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed historical drama revisits Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1965 campaign for voting rights and the march from Selma to Montgomery. David Oyelowo stars as King, with Carmen Ejogo portraying Coretta Scott King.

Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy (8/5)

British comedian Mo Gilligan puts his body to the test by eating nothing but fried chicken for 28 days. The Netflix documentary uses his experiment to examine the fast-food favorite and the industry built around it.
