Trump and Rubio weigh firing Kimberly Guilfoyle, likely to reach decision this week

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are weighing whether to fire U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle amid reports that she engaged in inappropriate and possibly illegal behavior as Athens envoy, a U.S. official told MS NOW.

Rubio is extremely unhappy with her, and Trump has expressed displeasure as well, but they have not decided what to do with her yet, said the official, who was granted anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. A decision on her future is likely to come this week, the official said.

The Associated Press first reported the news that Trump and Rubio were considering firing Guilfoyle.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House Monday afternoon, Trump said that officials are “not happy” about the allegations against Guilfoyle.

Rubio would not take any action against her without Trump’s sign-off, the U.S. official told MS NOW. Guilfoyle is the ex-fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, who married the model Bettina Anderson earlier this year.

The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Guilfoyle has been promoting a Greek energy company in meetings with foreign officials and even traveling with a lobbyist for the company. A lawyer for Guilfoyle said she “worked with companies across the energy sector” and was not focused on any one company. In a statement from the White House in response to that story, Rubio called Guilfoyle an “incredibly effective advocate for the President’s agenda.” Lawyers for the energy company also denied that Guilfoyle improperly promoted them.

More recent reports from the newspaper alleged that Guilfoyle sought $100,000 from a Trump donor to pay off her credit card bill — without leaving a paper trail — and, in return, would raise his tax and legal issues with administration officials. A report also alleged that she boasted about her ties to a pair of Greek tycoons while trying to score an invite to a private dinner being held for Eric Trump at the World Economic Forum. A lawyer for Guilfoyle disputed the authenticity of the messages in which she allegedly asked for money and said she was owed funds for travel, which the Trump donor denied. A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Athens said the ambassador followed the State Department’s guidelines on ethics and reporting gifts.

While visiting Athens last week, Rubio castigated reporters on the tarmac who asked him to comment on the reporting about Guilfoyle, telling them, “This is not the forum where we’re going to address that. Simple as that.”

He called Guilfoyle “a strong ambassador” at the time and said the U.S. Embassy in Greece “is doing a great job.”

Vice President JD Vance also addressed the allegations on Friday, saying they were merely “accusations.”

“Let’s actually see what the facts are. Let’s see what the truth is,” he told reporters when asked about the allegations against Guilfoyle. “And obviously, if there was something bad that happened, then people have to suffer consequences for it.”
