President Donald Trump has tapped conservative commentator Katie Zacharia as his new White House press secretary, filling a key administration role left vacant following Karoline Leavitt’s departure, the White House confirmed Friday.
Zacharia, who briefly worked at the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year, will take over one of the administration’s most prominent public-facing roles as Trump’s chief spokesperson as he navigates his second term.
The New York Times first reported Zacharia’s appointment.
Trump praised her on Truth Social following the announcement as a longtime supporter and highlighted her work.
“She has an unblemished record of support, and has been a loyal and brilliant supporter, right from the beginning. She is, likewise, a devoted fan and member of MAGA!” Trump wrote. “I am confident that Katie will deliver strong results for our Country as the next White House Press Secretary, as she has the respect of, and will work fantastically with, the Media, the American People, and my Administration.”
Zacharia thanked Trump for the appointment on Friday afternoon, calling it “the honor of a lifetime” and pledging to communicate the administration’s accomplishments to the public.
“I look forward to working with the White House press corps, and with reporters across the country, to get that record out,” she wrote on X.
The White House did not respond to MS NOW’s question about when Zacharia would officially begin her new position.
Zacharia joined DHS in February as deputy assistant secretary for public affairs and a spokesperson under then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Her tenure lasted only several weeks before she left the department.
A relatively obscure figure within Trump’s political sphere, Zacharia has ties to Trump’s personal business and his longtime allies, including serving as a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Trump’s social media platform Truth Social. She also held a leadership role at Fix California, a conservative advocacy organization founded by Trump ally Richard Grenell. She has made media appearances on Fox News and Newsmax.
On social media, Zacharia promoted several controversial claims, including falsely asserting that the 2020 presidential election was stolen and describing climate change as a “hoax.” In a post in May, she said that “green energy was China’s plot to subdue the United States” in a post in May.
She has also publicly opposed the Covid-19 vaccination, writing on X in August that her refusal to receive the vaccine saved her son, whom she described as a thriving 5-year-old. There is no scientific evidence supporting that claim.
Zacharia is also a member of the board of advisers for the White Rose Resistance, an anti-abortion organization founded in 2022, the year the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The group describes its mission as being “a voice for unborn children.” She also claimed in 2025 that mifepristone, a drug used in medical abortions, was a product of Nazi Germany. Experts and historians have debunked that claim.
Zacharia earned her law degree from Pepperdine University and worked at Zhong Lun Law Firm in Beijing from 2011 to 2013. She previously served as a judicial extern in federal court in Texas and a law clerk at Advocates International, a Christian legal network. While in Beijing, she worked with Compassion for Migrant Children, a nonprofit focused on migrant communities in China.
Her appointment places a staunch Trump loyalist at the forefront of the administration’s daily interactions with the press, nearly two months after Leavitt’s departure in August.
